4th Year Project: Interacting with Mobile Phone Notifications 26/03/2010
In 4th year, we were required to do an individual project that lasted the entire year. I chose to self-define a project so that I could gain experience developing for my new Android smartphone. After a few iterations of my project proposal, I decided to implement a non-visual notification system using the accelerometer and vibration motor, by simulating the feeling of balls rolling around in the box. This extended research performed in the Dynamics and Interaction group. I deployed the system in the wild using the Android Market, and I also evaluated the system with known participants, including my brother's workmates at Amazon Dublin. In addition to the main project, I was able to explore implementing automatic gain control. This was a fun project, and my first experience in writing a dissertation, which I link to below.
