HCI4: Combining IM and SMS streams 01/12/2009
As an assignment for HCI4, we were asked to propose an application that builds upon current HCI systems. I chose to explore what happens if you combine Instant Messaging (IM) and text messaging (SMS). Prior to my proposal, I tested the feasibility of the application by implementing an IM client in Android with the Smack API and listening for SMS notifications. Once this was accepted, I created an Android app that combined these streams and ran a usability experiment. I found that people think differently about how they use IM and SMS, despite their similarities. I also found that it can be confusing for recipients who do not use a combined interface if a conversation becomes split between the two due to intermittent connectivity. My report is provided in the link below. This covers various aspects of the design, including the aims of the system and how I tested it.
